The Path of Illumination follows the four brands. An antimatter bomb in the middle of the papal election threatens the Vatican.
Antimatter is negative matter which does not exist in any natural form. It can be created in a lab setting. Vittoria Vetra Avelet Zurer has been working on creating antimatter.
She collects the first substantial bit of antimatter. The antimatter is perfectly suspended in a magnetic bottle. To keep it suspended in the bottle, the batteries must be changed every twenty-four hours. The antimatter will explode if it comes into contact with any matter, such as the bottle or air.
The bottle is stolen from the lab despite extremely tight security. Kidnappers take four prominent Cardinals. These four Cardinals are the top candidates to the papacy. A murder is planned for each Cardinal. The ambigrams describe the time and place of each murder. The secret order of the Illuminati claims responsibility for the murders.
Professor Langdon works quickly using the symbols and riddles to solve the mystery. The bomb is set to destroy most of Rome at midnight the same day. Professor Langdon works with scientist Vittoria Vetra to find the bomb before it explodes. He acts on behalf of the Papacy itself until a new pope is chosen.
The Camerlengo works closely with the Swiss Guard, Langdon and Vetra to search for the kidnapped cardinals and the canister of antimatter.In Angels and Demons (), Dan Brown introduces Robert Langdon, the Harvard symbologist who would later star in Brown’s worldwide best seller The Da Vinci Code ().
